Speakers, Part II.

So the AR is still in my car... maybe I should leave it there - that sentence rhymes well. Before I left for Washington, I had a chance to test the Jensens, but they weren't great. Compared to the Advent Loudspeakers that I currently had (and am still using) they were very flat and mid-ey. Plus the enclosures were a little beat-up. Oh well, definitely worth $10 for the pair. If I keep them, I'll pull the 10" speakers and the horns out, but I may decide to sell them if I encounter someone who's in need of a decent pair of speakers...

SO - the current setup is 2 pair of Advent Loudspeakers, stacked on top of each other, regardless of the fact that the new ones (positioned on the bottom) aren't connected because they need new surrounds. The working ones sound better raised off of the ground, it raises the dB level of the bass. After I've had time to re-surround the bottom ones, the top ones will be flipped upside-down, with the woofers on top to create better sound imaging. Then I just need a new cd player and turntable...

Currently, the component setup is: Bang & Olufsen Beogram 1700 Turntable with MMC 20EN cartdridge, and an Onkyo DX-1800 CD player that kinda sucks and doesn't like cd-rs all that much. The receiver is a harman/kardon hk 570i. GOD it's fun to pretend to be an audiophile!

Washington.

May 27th, 28th, 29th = Washington. The state. Sasquatch music festival, a one day event at the Gorge Amphitheater. The pixies headlined the evening, and unfortunately due to a closed stage, I wasn't able to see them. Writing this in the Seattle/Tacoma airport right now, very tired and lusting for a cigarette, though I don't have time to smoke one because I probably wouldn't make it back in time for boarding. Unfortunately, I've got to stick around because somehow, I wasn't assigned a seat - hopefully they'll give me one. No music yet today - I should be charging my ipod right now in preparation for the flight...

Anyhow, experiences from Saturday:

1. Ate mildly acceptable bowl of Sweet & Sour Chicken Rice
2. Saw very strange act consisting of 2 (14?) year old girls, dressed scantily, singing while playing drums and keyboard. Smoosh? was their name i think?
3. Hit my chin on a road case while helping an over zealous stage hand roll it up the ramp to the stage - he pushed to fast while I ran backward and i tripped...
4. Saw attractive girl from Chicago who works for Drag City.
5. Watched Modest Mouse from the side of the stage, with the Gorge to my right under a beautiful sunset.
6. Got kicked off the stage before the Pixies played - they had a closed stage, and I really wanted to see them.
7. Failed at numerous attempts to gain access to the stage while the Pixies played.
8. Rode back 1 hour to the shitty hotel in a mini-van.

Speakers, Part I.

So for the past few days i've had a great time pretending that i am an audiophile. on both tuesday and wednesday, i had random thrift-store stops that, between the two of them yielded a purchase of 7 vintage speakers. Tuesday, at the infamous Brown Elephant, (Milwaukee Location) i found an old pair of Heathkit speakers, one of which was missing the front grill cloth, but looked interesting regardless. I was rushed, as they were closing 5 minutes from the time i walked in the door, so i decided on a whim to pay the $5/each for the speakers and carry them the 1 block home. When i got home, i tried the speakers out and determined that they sounded pretty good - that is until i compared them to the Advent Loudspeakers that I had been using previously... The Heathkits contained 10" Jensen speakers from 1968. This discovery was a little exciting, however i learned that they were lower-end models and not regarded as anything special, really. I've since pulled the Jensens and trashed the enclosures - no need to add to the pile of crap in our loft. On to wednesday...

This time it was the Ark Thrift Store on Milwaukee. Here I found a pair of Advent Loudspeakers almost exactly like the ones I had currently, an old pair of Jensen TF-25 speakers, and (unfortunately) ONE AR 2a speaker. The Advents need to be re-surrounded, but the Jensens and the AR are both in fine working condition. Again, i paid $5/each for the speakers, and loaded them into the back of my car. The AR is still there...

Next Post: Speakers Part II.
